A production of Lighthouse Fellowship Church


   Based on the script The Passion of Christ (2026c), the characters fall into several narrative groups that move the story from Jesus’ public ministry → rising conflict → betrayal → trial → crucifixion → resurrection. Below are character descriptions and story arcs that reflect how each role functions dramatically in the play.

Character Descriptions & Story Arcs

(The Passion of Christ – 2026c)

1. Jesus and the Core Disciples

Jesus

Description:
The central figure and Messiah. Calm, authoritative, compassionate, and resolute in fulfilling his mission despite knowing the suffering ahead.

Story Arc:

  • Begins teaching and performing signs that draw crowds.
  • Challenges corruption in the temple and confronts religious authorities.
  • Predicts his death and prepares his disciples.
  • Betrayed, arrested, and tried.
  • Crucified but ultimately vindicated through the resurrection scene.

Peter

Description:
Passionate, impulsive disciple devoted to Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Loyal follower and outspoken defender.
  • Attempts to protect Jesus in the garden with a sword.
  • Fear overtakes him during the trial and he denies Jesus three times.
  • Experiences guilt and remorse, foreshadowing future restoration.

John

Description:
Faithful disciple and observer of events; often closest to Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Helps record and witness important moments.
  • Supports Jesus’ ministry and accompanies him during key scenes.
  • Remains near Jesus during the arrest and trial when others flee.
  • Represents faithful witness and understanding.

Andrew

Description:
Practical, thoughtful disciple who often mediates conflicts.

Story Arc:

  • Encourages faith and understanding among disciples.
  • Acts as a bridge between Jesus and outsiders (such as the Greeks).
  • Remains supportive throughout the ministry and teaching scenes.

Philip

Description:
Curious and questioning disciple.

Story Arc:

  • Seeks deeper understanding of Jesus’ identity.
  • Brings outsiders to Jesus.
  • Represents the intellectual search for truth.

Thomas

Description:
Skeptical but loyal disciple.

Story Arc:

  • Often confused by Jesus’ teachings.
  • Questions the meaning of events but remains present with the group.
  • Symbolizes the struggle to understand faith.

Judas Iscariot

Description:
One of the twelve disciples who becomes disillusioned and betrays Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Initially part of the inner circle.
  • Shows frustration over Jesus’ priorities (e.g., Mary’s perfume).
  • Secretly conspires with the priests.
  • Betrays Jesus with a kiss and later regrets his actions.

Mary, Mother of Jesus

Description:
The compassionate and sorrowful mother who watches her son’s mission unfold.

Story Arc:

  • Appears during ministry scenes.
  • Witnesses increasing danger around Jesus.

  • Represents maternal devotion and suffering.

Mary Magdalene

Description:
A devoted follower transformed by Jesus’ ministry.

Mary of Bethany

Description:
Deeply devoted follower known for her act of worship.

Story Arc:

  • Anoints Jesus with expensive perfume.
  • Her act foreshadows Jesus’ burial.

Martha of Bethany

Description:
Practical and responsible sister of Mary.

Story Arc:

  • Focuses on service and hospitality.
  • Represents faithful everyday devotion.

Mary, Wife of Clopas

Description:
Follower of Jesus and witness to events.

Story Arc:

  • Part of the faithful group present through key moments.
  • Supports the community of believers.

Veronica

Description:
Young follower who admires Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Represents the younger generation inspired by Jesus.
  • Appears during the entry into Jerusalem and later scenes.

3. Bethany Family

Lazarus

Description:
Man raised from the dead by Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • His resurrection becomes a sign that increases belief in Jesus.
  • Also intensifies the threat perceived by religious leaders.

Simon the Leper

Description:
Head of the household in Bethany where Jesus is honored.

Story Arc:

  • Hosts Jesus and disciples.
  • Represents gratitude toward Jesus’ miracles.

4. Religious Authorities

Caiaphas

Description:
High priest and chief antagonist.

Story Arc:

  • Alarmed by Jesus’ popularity.
  • Leads the conspiracy to arrest and kill him.
  • Manipulates political power to achieve this goal.

Amariah

Description:
Priest aligned with Caiaphas.

Story Arc:

  • Questions Jesus’ authority.
  • Participates in plotting and trial scenes.

Eleazar

Description:
Temple priest and interrogator.

Story Arc:

  • Confronts Jesus publicly.
  • Helps organize accusations.

Benaiah

Description:
Pharisee involved in questioning Jesus.

  • Challenges Jesus’ teachings.
  • Gradually becomes part of the larger conspiracy.

Joseph of Arimathea

Description:
Respected Pharisee sympathetic to Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Observes the growing conflict.
  • Shows hesitation about the plot against Jesus.
  • Later associated with Jesus’ burial.

Nicodemus

Description:
Quiet supporter among the religious elite.

Story Arc:

  • Represents internal conflict among leaders.
  • Sympathetic but cautious.

5. Roman Authority

Pontius Pilate

Description:
Roman governor responsible for maintaining order.

Story Arc:

  • Questions Jesus and finds no clear guilt.
  • Attempts to avoid condemning him.
  • Ultimately gives in to political pressure and allows crucifixion.

Roman Soldiers

Description:
Agents of Roman authority.

Story Arc:

  • Arrest Jesus.
  • Carry out the crucifixion.

Barabbas

Description:
Revolutionary prisoner.

Story Arc:

  • Offered as an alternative prisoner to release.
  • Crowd chooses him over Jesus.

Simon of Cyrene

Description:
Man compelled to help carry Jesus’ cross.

Story Arc:

  • Represents the ordinary person unexpectedly drawn into the story.

Malchus

Description:
Servant of the High Priest.

Story Arc:

  • Injured when Peter attacks the arresting group.
  • Jesus heals him, demonstrating mercy even during arrest.

Thieves (Joel & Zedekiah)

Description:
Criminals crucified beside Jesus.

Story Arc:

  • Provide contrast between repentance and rejection.

7. Crowd & Symbolic Characters

These roles help illustrate how society responds to Jesus.

Children – symbolize innocence and faith.
Temple Merchants – represent corruption in worship.
Greeks (Anastasia & Angelica) – symbolize the message spreading beyond Israel.
Servants, townspeople, and accusers – represent public opinion shifting between admiration and hostility.

Character Briefs – The Passion of Christ (2026c)

Central Role

Jesus
The Messiah and central figure of the story. Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of God, performs miracles, and challenges corruption among religious leaders. Calm, compassionate, and resolute, he willingly accepts suffering and crucifixion to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

The Disciples

Peter
A passionate and outspoken disciple who deeply loves Jesus but struggles with fear. He boldly defends Jesus but later denies knowing him during the trial, showing the human struggle between courage and weakness.

John
The loyal and attentive disciple often closest to Jesus. He listens carefully to Jesus’ teachings and remains faithful during the darkest moments of the story.

Andrew
A thoughtful disciple who often brings people to Jesus. He represents steady faith and curiosity about Jesus’ teachings.

Philip
A questioning disciple who seeks understanding. His curiosity reflects the desire to comprehend Jesus’ message.

Thomas
A disciple who struggles with doubt but remains loyal. He represents the human need for reassurance and understanding.

James (brother of John)
One of the disciples present throughout Jesus’ ministry. Loyal but less vocal in the events of the story.

James son of Alphaeus
A quiet member of the twelve disciples who follows Jesus faithfully.

Matthew
Former tax collector who became a disciple of Jesus. Represents transformation and redemption.

Nathaniel
A devoted follower who supports Jesus’ mission alongside the other disciples.

Simon the Zealot
A passionate follower who once supported political revolution but now follows Jesus’ spiritual kingdom.

Thaddeus
A disciple who participates in the group discussions and events leading to the arrest.

Mary, Mother of Jesus
The compassionate and grieving mother who watches her son suffer. Her presence represents love, sorrow, and faith through suffering.

Mary Magdalene
A devoted follower who remains faithful through Jesus’ crucifixion and is among the first to witness the resurrection. Represents deep loyalty and faith.

Mary of Bethany
Sister of Lazarus and Martha. She shows deep devotion to Jesus, famously honoring him with perfume.

Martha of Bethany
Practical and responsible sister of Mary. She demonstrates service and hospitality toward Jesus.

A faithful follower who remains near Jesus and supports the community of believers.

Another temple authority who interrogates Jesus and participates in the legal proceedings against him.

A Pharisee who challenges Jesus’ authority and teachings.

A respected Pharisee who quietly sympathizes with Jesus.

Nicodemus
A Pharisee curious about Jesus’ teachings. He represents those within leadership who struggle privately with belief.

Shammai
A scribe who supports the religious authorities questioning Jesus.

Roman Authority

Pontius Pilate
Roman governor responsible for judging Jesus. Though unsure of Jesus’ guilt, he ultimately yields to political pressure from the crowd and religious leaders.

Roman Soldiers / Temple Guards
Agents of authority who arrest Jesus, guard him, and carry out the crucifixion.

Betrayer and Criminals

Judas Iscariot
One of the twelve disciples who betrays Jesus to the priests for thirty pieces of silver. Later experiences regret over his actions.

Barabbas
A revolutionary prisoner whom the crowd chooses to release instead of Jesus.

Joel
One of the thieves crucified beside Jesus.

Zedekiah
The other thief crucified alongside Jesus.

A bystander forced by Roman soldiers to carry Jesus’ cross on the way to the crucifixion.

Malchus
Servant of the high priest who is injured during Jesus’ arrest.

Heli
Owner of the donkey used during the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.

Nava
Another owner involved in providing the donkey for Jesus’ entry.

Ariella
A serving girl in the High Priest’s house who accuses Peter of knowing Jesus.

Netanya
Another servant girl who confronts Peter about being one of Jesus’ followers.

Moshe
A man who accuses Peter of being associated with Jesus.

Members of the crowd in the High Priest’s house who accuse and mock Jesus.

Temple Merchants

Ketina, Hadara, Ilana
Merchants selling goods in the temple courtyard. They represent the corruption Jesus confronts during the temple cleansing.

A Greek visitor curious about Jesus and his teachings.

Angelica
Another Greek observer who seeks understanding of Jesus’ message.

Young boys who appear among the crowd following Jesus.

Young girls who help portray the community surrounding Jesus.
